Orientation to the Religious Group Profile Pages

This page provides a gateway to Profiles of more than two hundred Religious Movements, most of which were created by students in Sociology 257 at the University of Virginia. Each Profile offers basic demographic and background information, a summary of beliefs, discussion of controversial issues (when appropriate), links to important web sites about each group, and select print bibliographies. In addition, we provide an index with links to hundreds of religious groups that are not profiled on this site.

The Profile materials may be accessed in a number of convenient ways. You can scroll through the profiled groups alphabetically, use the alphabetic jump links, search both for on-site and and off-site links, or select one of the several classificatory schemes we have created.

  • Alphabetic Listing of Group Profiles

  • Group Profiles Organized by Faith Traditions

This is our classification scheme for the religious groups whose profiles appear on this site. Of necessity, a somewhat imperfect structure, especially for some hard-to-classify groups that fit perfectly within no larger faith tradition.

  • Group Profiles & Off-site Links Organized by J. Gordon Melton's Religious Family Groupings

Organizes the profiles available here following J. Gordon Melton in his authoritative Encyclopedia of American Religions. We have also linked in this subsection to the homepages of hundreds of religious groups not profiled on this site.
